HENDRICKSON 01 Oct 1914 William A Hendrickson, a well known citizen of Cumberland, died today at his home near the paper mill in the Narrows. He was 63 years old and had been in ill health for nearly a year. Mr Hendrickson was born in Bedford County PA, coming to Cumberland as a young man. He was an auctioneer for 25 years and a constable for nearly 18 years. He was married three times, and is survived by his third wife and ten children; John Hendrickson from the first union; Ralph Hendrickson and Walter Hendrickson from the second marriage; and Rose, Blanche, George, Crawford, Paul and Alice from the last marriage; and one sister, Mrs John Robinette of Rush MD; and one brother August Hendrickson of Pleasant Valley PA. Burial in Union Grove.

Charles Buford Hornbrook, 68
former photographer for the
Times and A1leganian Company,
died yesterday in Fort Lauder-
dale, Fla.
Mr. Hornbrook, who resided
at 1250 South West 52d Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, had been in
ill health since January, and
died at his home.
A photographer for many
years, Mr. Hornbrook retired in
1967 and moved to Florida the
following year
A native of Garrett County,
he was a veteran of both the
Army and the Navy, having
served in the Cavalry in the
Southwest during the 1920s, and
as a Seabee in both the Euro-
pean and -the Pacific theatres of
World War II.
- Surviving are his w i d o w,
Madeleine (Vogt) Hornbrook; a
son, Charles Hornbrook, a war-
rant officer with the Navy in
Cuba; a daughter, Mrs. Char-
leine Jones, Lawrenceville, Ill.;
a stepdaughter, Mrs. Madeline
Mastrianni, Lakeland, Fla.;, a-
stepson, Antonio Ferlino,
Lauderdale; a half sister, Mrs.
Myrtle Robinette, city,, and four
grandchildren.
The body is at the Plantation (Fla.) Fumneral Home.

Wife's General Notes

Madeleine was Born in France and moved to the USA at the age of 19. She married John Ferlino, divorced, and later married Charles Buford Hornbrook, Sr. She died in Plantation, Florida 1n 1975.

Madeleine was a linguist mastering many languages including difficult ones such as Hungarian, and Mandarin. She would often add "and a smattering of English" which was she spoke fluently albeit with a French accent.

She was a wonderful mother and her children adored her, as did her husband. She was extremely active in the Girls Scouts of America. She enjoyed fishing with her family.

Later in life, she suffered significant hearing loss. She passed away in the Fort Lauderdale, FL area 18 September, 1975.

The information provided here is anecdotal, derived from personal observation of Joseph Charles Hornbrook as well as interviews with survivng family members, newspaper clippings, and family photographs.


General Notes for Child Charles Buford Hornbrook Jr.-[12]

Charles B. Hornbrook, Jr. had a stellar military career in the U.S. Navy. Enlisting as seaman recruit (E-1), he soon showed his considerable talent and knowledge in the disciplines of electronics, communications, and leadership. He served as fire control technician, and instructor of missile radar systems. He then attained the rank of Warrant Officer and served as the Tactical Data Systems Officer and Communications Officer aboard the U.S.S Josephus Daniels He further served as Base Communications Officer and Satellite Communicatopns Officer at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Awards include Navy Acheivement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal with two Bronze Stars, Expert Marksman Medal, and Surface Warfare Officer.

He retired at the Rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4).

An avid Amateur Radio Operator, Charlie Hornbrook hailed as WB4AMM (Always Mixing Martinis) and KG4CB. He Worked all states, and all continents. While at Guantanamo bay, he was fond of referring to his "Comical Quad" a homemade antenna made of locally grown bamboo.

Charlie Hornbrook was never far from the sea, living out the retirement years in one of two sailing yachts which he owned.

A gregarious individual, people were naturally drawn to him and he left behind scores of friends.
